NJFPA NEWS Summer 2010

Welcome to the summer 2010 issue of the New Jersey Food Processors Association NJFPA NEWS. Our association is growing rapidly and we are continually providing new and enhanced benefits for our members. Information about a number of new events and opportunities follows below!

NJ Food Processors Networking Dinner Event will focus on Sustainable Energy Solutions

The New Jersey Food Processors Association (NJFPA) will hold its next Networking Dinner on Wednesday, October 20, at the Westin Mt. Laurel. The event, sponsored by Hess Corporation, begins at 6:00 p.m. with cash bar and networking; the dinner and educational program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Cost for event registration and dinner is just $50.

The educational program will include a presentation entitled "Sustainable Energy Solutions: From Conservation to Renewable Energy. The guest speakers will be Tim Bigler, market strategist and Bob McGrew, account manager, both of Hess Corporation."

"As people look to find sustainable green" solutions in their business, there are a variety of options to consider," said Bigler. "A sustainable energy pyramid of solutions exists, that starts with conservation at the base, moving to efficiency, reduced energy demand, and topping it off with a look at renewable energy options like solar and wind vs. renewable energy certificates."

"Our members and guests will not want to miss this critically important perspective as there is more and more emphasis placed on reducing energy costs in the food industry, and operating a business based on sustainability," said Lou Cooperhouse, president of the NJFPA. "Our quarterly Networking Dinners are designed to inform people in the industry about issues that are of specific value and concern to their businesses. In addition, our members really benefit from the networking opportunities, and find this to be an invaluable way to make new contacts."

Tim Bigler is a 25 year veteran of the energy marketplace. He is the market strategist within the Natural Gas Operations team at Hess Corporation and authors the majority of market update material distributed to Hess Corporation customers on a daily basis. Bob McGrew has over 13 years experience in the energy industry, and is account manager for Gloucester County & Cumberland County. Hess Corporation is supporting the Networking Dinner as a Silver Sponsor of the NJFPA.

NJFPA Announces Membership Drive Incentive

The NJFPA board has set a goal of increasing membership by at least 50 percent in the coming year. To help reach this ambitious goal, they are offering an incentive for the member who recruits the most members between now and July 30, 2011. The winning member will receive a plaque from the NJFPA, and a gift certificate for $500.

As a food industry professional, each of our members is at the center of a network of people that could benefit from membership in the New Jersey Food Processors Association. Now is the time to promote the benefits of our association and convince your far-reaching network to join the NJFPA, and to let us know that you referred them!

New Members-Only Section on NJFPA Website Now Open

Our NJFPA website, which is continually updated to include content of interest to our members, now offers a members-only section, which includes a directory of all current members. In addition, it includes a list serve in which members can email each other; a section that includes member discounts offered by our associate members; and reports, presentations, and white papers written by NJFPA members. Food Safety and QA Roundtable

A new program from NJFPA, The Quality Assurance Roundtable, is now providing an opportunity for the quality managers or other interested individuals at NJFPA member companies to learn about best industry practices in food safety and quality assurance.

The topics covered by the Quality Assurance Roundtables are based on the interests of the attendees. Each monthly meeting will have an invited speaker and round-table-format discussion of the speaker's topic, and discussion time for other items, such as recent product recalls, food poisoning outbreaks, or regulatory announcements.

On June 15, a roundtable discussion on SQF (Safe Quality Food) Certification was held at F&S Produce in Rosenhayn. Doug Nicoll, director of technical services at F & S, which recently instituted SQF for their operations, was the presenter for the session.

Upcoming roundtables include:

September 21: Steven Kaye of Food Sciences Corporation speaking about implementation of ERP systems and Donna Schaffner presenting a report on the Pennsylvania Food Safety Summit meeting in Harrisburg. The meeting will be held 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at 116 Gaither Dr. Mount Laurel, NJ 08054.

November 16: Bill Dotts of the FDA speaking about the Reportable Food Registry. The meeting will be held 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, 450 East Broad Street (Rt 49) Bridgeton, NJ 08302.

December 14: Richard Ritota of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services speaking about disaster contingency plans. The meeting will be held 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, 450 East Broad Street (Rt 49) Bridgeton, NJ 08302.

January 11: Dr. Dallas Hoover of University of Delaware speaking about high pressure pasteurization technology. The meeting will be held at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, 450 East Broad Street (Rt 49) Bridgeton, NJ 08302.

The roundtables are free for any employee of an NJFPA member company. Peter Pappas Memorial Golf Tournament

The annual NJFPA Peter Pappas Memorial Golf Tournament was held at the Buena Vista Country Club in Buena, NJ on June 10. One Hundred Forty golfers attended this very popular event. This year's tournament was held in memory of Peter Pappas, an NJFPA past president, board member, and long-time Golf Tournament chairman, who passed away on March 8th, 2010.

First Place Winners were Mike Zarrella, Brian Romani, Dan Gorski, and Matt Enriquez; Second Place Winners were Art Galetta, Bob Porter, Anton Landgraf, and Jeff Danner; Third Place Winners were Pete Irvin, Joe Cummons, Glenn McKellar, and Steve Larro; Closest to Pin - #12 went to Dave Catalana; Closest to Pin - #17 went to Scott Anderson; Men's Longest Drive - #7 went to Sam Pipitone III; Women's Longest Drive - #7 went to Kathy Roeder; and Straightest
Drive - #16 went to Jay Friel.

Tom Mangus to Join NJFPA Board, Representing Campbell's Soup

The Executive Board and Directors of the New Jersey Food Processors Association welcome Tom Mangus, Director of Global Procurement at Campbell's Soup, to the Board of Directors. Tom will be replacing Brett Buatti, who received a promotion at Campbell's Soup and has relocated to northern California. Brett's thoughtful leadership and ongoing support has been a significant benefit to our organization, and the NJFPA Board of Directors greatly appreciates Brett's many contributions during his years of service. We are excited to have Tom Mangus on our board, and we will be introducing other new Board members in our next newsletter!

Michele Hujber Joins NJFPA Staff

The Board of Directors of the NJFPA has announced the appointment of Michele Hujber as executive secretary of the organization, effective June 15. Hujber is an accredited public relations professional with more than 20 years experience. She will oversee all NJFPA events, meetings and communications, and will work to increase NJFPA membership statewide.

"Having worked for many years as a public relations specialist for Rutgers' School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, I am familiar with many of the issues, trends, companies, and individuals associated with New Jersey's food industry," said Hujber. "I look forward getting to know all of the members and working with them to help advance the industry in our state."

The Benefits of Membership

NJFPA's membership year runs from August 1 through July 31. Current members should have recently received a renewal reminder in the mail.

There are many good reasons to renew your membership. The NJFPA is an organization of manufacturers and suppliers of food and agricultural products joined together to promote best practices, share information and expand the industry. NJFPA programs are designed to foster education regarding food industry trends, technologies, practices and processes, and include a number of networking opportunities between manufacturers and suppliers to our industry. These include:

  • The NJFPA Annual Conference, which will feature keynote speaker Lt. Governor of New Jersey Kim Guadagno and guest speaker Caren S. Franzini, chief executive officer of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. There will also be additional speakers who are leaders in our industry and an outstanding exhibit of products and services provided by our associate members. The conference will be held on January 31, 2011, and we expect about 200+ people to attend this event. It will be held at the Westin in Mount Laurel, NJ.
  • The annual NJFPA Peter Pappas Memorial Golf Tournament, an extremely popular event offering a casual networking opportunity. For the past two years we've filled the course with 140 golfers! A putting contest generates hundreds of dollars annually for the Jim Sclafani Scholarship, benefitting local high school students. Our next outing will be on June 9, 2011.
  • Networking Dinners, which are held three to four times per year, keep our members up-to-date about issues that are of specific value and concern to their businesses. Our Networking Dinner this past April was a great success with 55 people attending, and we expect an even larger crowd at our next Networking Dinner this October 20.
  • Industry Roundtable meetings, which are designed specifically to address issues in great depth that are of concern to our members. We have two Industry Roundtable groups in place now, one addressing Food Safety and the other addressing Human Resources. These roundtables meet six to 12 times a year, and others are planned for the future.
  • Our NJFPA website, which is continually updated to include content of interest to our members.
  • Sponsorship opportunities for our Associate Members, which enable all of our events to be made available for a very nominal fee to our members.

As you can see, the NJFPA is continually striving to provide value to its members. Membership for you and your company is well worth the cost of just $250.
